Today Our Greatest Threat is Domestic Terror

20 years ago on this date, I woke to engage in my regular routine of cigarettes, coffee and the Today Show, prior to going to my regular morning meeting at The Log Cabin. But this was to be a morning like no other morning prior. I turned on the TV and. I witnessed what I assumed was the preview for a new Bruce Willis movie. Alas, it was not and my life changed it’s trajectory and I would never be the same again.

We never made it to the meeting but instead huddled around each other in front of the TV all day and tried to make sense of what was happening. A constant chorus of “WTF?” and, “is this really happening?” filled the room but mostly it was eerily silent as we all reflected about what it meant to each if us.

Over the years, what happened and what it means to me has evolved. Today, I feel disappointed that we humans missed the opportunity of a lifetime to change our relationship with each other and the rest of the world. We got so close and then once again it became about good and evil and evil must be destroyed and what initially I thought was a movie but was real then became just another typical big box office movie plot. Ironic. Sad.

Today I will pray for peace but not just peace on a grand scale but peace in my own heart and our collective hearts. I will choose to sit and reflect each day how I either contribute to peace or add discord. I will note how I live my life as my actions are my legacy, not just my words. This will be my tribute to those who were murdered that day and their families and to those who survived and still live with the trauma.
