A Message of Hope and Understanding

As a Family Coach deeply embedded in the journey of addiction recovery with many families, I’ve seen firsthand the confusion, fear, and heartbreak that substance use can bring into our lives. But today, I want to share a perspective that might not only change the way we view the so-called “overdose crisis” but also illuminate pathways toward hope, healing, and, importantly, effective prevention. Let’s dive into understanding overdoses not just as isolated incidents but as complex situations most often involving multi-drug poisonings.

Redefining the Crisis

Overdose or Poisoning?

Traditionally, we’ve used the term “overdose” to describe the tragic events leading to thousands of deaths each year. However, this term implies a certain level of intention (a specifc dosage) or misuse that doesn’t always align with the reality of these situations. Many victims are unaware of the potency or even the presence of lethal substances like fentanyl in what they believe to be safer drugs. This lack of awareness points to a more accurate term: drug poisoning.
