F Rock Bottom, Soft Landing Instead

Rock bottom is an incredibly dangerous directive and responsible for so much needless suffering and death. It’s born of personal, family and social stigmas, not science.

As behavioral health professionals we get to stop publicly promoting it as a safe pathway, immediately! Even if it was MY experience, I’m not the representative sample of the whole experience out there.

Certainly as a first person account or personal story it’s still valuable as it is MY truth just not THE truth for everyone.

Healthy emotional connection is the currency of wellness, not tough love, not punishment or suffering.

We know more about behavioral science than ever, of course, and what can truly move someone along a change continuum from deep wounds and the pain that comes with it, meaning we get to do better by those we serve and ultimately save more lives.

Rock bottom is certainly a way of interpreting what happened to me, it’s a personal experience, but it’s not sound medical advice so we get to stop passing it off as something that people have to experience in order to heal.
